CHARLOTTE, N.C.â"First lady Michelle Obama opened the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday with a deeply personal speech connecting the economic struggles of average workers, including those of her parents, to the policies her husband, Barack Obama, has pursued as president.
Her nationally televised address was a portrait of the U.S. economy from the view of working people enduring personal struggles, including Mrs. Obamaâs father, a city water plant worker with multiple sclerosis. Mrs. Obama used the story of her father, and Mr. Obamaâs bank-worker grandmother, to explain the presidentâs support for equal-pay laws, his signature health-insurance law and student loans.
